In electrical systems increased resistance can be caused by component age, fatigue, oxidation, wear, loose connections or poor installation. Because the signature of increased resistance is heat, thermal imaging is the ideal predictive maintenance tool for the early detection of problems in electrical components and systems.
Performed on a regular basis infrared inspections can help detect and document incipient failures. Combined with timely, effective repairs, infrared inspections can improve reliability and help to reduce unscheduled down time.
Before an electrical component burns up, it heats up. Infrared thermography is used to perform Pd/Pm inspections on electrical equipment because excess heat is usually the first sign of trouble on electrical (or mechanical) apparatus. These failures come in the form of loose connections, imbalanced circuits, defective breakers, damaged switches, faulty fuses or fuse clips, overloaded circuits, workmanship or material defects and a wide range of other conditions which eventually lead to excess heat and component failure.
